Beauty is what you see

Reflect

Many have asked the story behind The Chunky Mermaid. Why do they have to be so fat? Why can't you draw perfectly shaped, beautiful mermaids? Why are they so naked? Why are they so pale? Why are their tits so big?

Everyone has different ideas of what makes someone/thing beautiful. Some prefer thin, some prefer more flesh, some prefer dark, fair, etc? And the truth is, there is nothing wrong with whatever you perceive as beautiful, you're entitled to your own opinion.

I draw what I draw because I feel like it. I can draw a chunky mermaid today and a waif-y mermaid tomorrow, it really doesn't matter. Some days you look at an art piece and you feel like it speaks to you, some days it won't. It really boils down to you, in the end.

Look into the mirror (mosaic) and reflect upon yourself. -SOLD

The Chunky Mermaid

The Chunky Mermaid
When I first got my mermaid tail, I was so excited about trying it out in the pool. I tot it was going to be a breeze, because I was so comfortable with water. It wasn't. I struggled, and didn't make a very graceful mermaid at all.

This is what I looked like, trying to swim like a mermaid, the first time. Sans seashell nip cover. - SOLD

Dreamy mermaid

Duyung berangan
This was a fun piece. I had recently purchased glow in the dark paints and I hadn't had the chance to play around with it. And I had never done a gingerhead mermaid before. So this was perfect.

The hair and tail glows in the dark. Did you know that when it starts to lose its 'glow', you can just 'charge' it under the sun or light for a few hours? Nipple covers are seashells from Pulau Tioman, off Johor. - SOLD

See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil

See,speak, hear no evil

I love beaches. I will literally drop anything for an island/beach getaway. There's so much beauty to be found on the beach alone. Sand, dead corals, seashells and if you're lucky, sea glass!

A few months ago, I went to Pulau Tenggol, off the coast of Terengganu. While the others went diving, I trawled the beach for sea glass. And I was lucky for there were plenty!

I have a lot of affection for this series. I depleted my entire collection of sea glass on these pieces. And I'm happy that they're going to a good friend. -SOLD

Transgender Mermaid

Tranny Mermaid

I started working on this during a short holiday to Sabah. Working on art during a holiday is the worst idea, ever. Most of my luggage space was consumed with art supplies and canvas, that I didn't have much space left for clothes.

The idea came from binge-watching Orange is the new Black. I'm drawn to Sophia's character. The correctional facility had cut down her hormone dosage and she feared losing what she had worked so hard for. Hence the sagging skin and breasts that translated into this piece.

Tail scales made with plastic spoons and the breast cover, with coffee stirrers.
